Bellwork: Write down the three steps of writing a topic sentence, using the burrito summary method. Then, write a sentence summarizing a book you have read in the past.
Then we worked on the Demon Spelling 2 packet. We read portions of "Riding Freedom" and talked about Words of the Wiser. When you hear a wiser character give the main character advice, you should ask yourself, "What's the life lesson and how might it affect the character?" If you were absent you need to read the excerpts and answer those questions for each section that has words of the wiser. We learned about Compound Sentences and did the Simple and Compound Sentences Worksheet. Finally we watched "Cooler Self" and "Lifted" and on our bellwork paper wrote the theme from those videos. Quote of the Week: "Without a struggle, there can be no progress." -Fredrick Douglass. For bellwork write a paragraph about why it is essential to do hard things in order to learn.
Then we took Demon Spelling Quiz #1. This must be made up before school, during lunch, or after school in Mrs. Gonzalez's classroom. We read the excerpts from A Long Walk to Water and talked about how Tough Questions (when a character asks themselves a really difficult question) reveals the internal conflict. Students may ask themselves, "What does this make me wonder about?" Students who were absent need to answer the following questions: 1-What would you have done if you were in his situation after reading the 2nd section 2- What do the tough questions make you wonder about? We also talked about how to write effective summaries. First, Identify what you are summarizing, second choose a verb, and third finish your thought. We summarized the story "Dinner Party" as a class, then the students wrote their own summaries of "Duffy's Jacket." For bellwork: "Write a paragraph about how the things you learn in this class will help you in the future."
We then read excerpts from the Novel Crash by Jerri Spinelli and talked about Aha Moments. When you find an Aha Moment, it is important to ask, "How will this change things?" Students who are absent need to find 3 Aha Moments and write about how they think each Aha Moment might change things. We also did an Avoiding Fragments Worksheet. Finally, we played a game reviewing how to use the Demon Spelling 1 words correctly in sentences. We have a quiz on this on Monday. We finished the Hard to Find Subjects worksheet.
Afterwords we read the story "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes and looked for Contrast and Contradictions. We also answered questions 1, 7, 9 from the book (p. 183.) We corrected and turned in the Demon Spelling packet. We did the Sentences Worksheet, and Completing Simple Sentences Worksheet. We finished the demon spelling 1 packet, then we studied demon spelling on Quizlet. (Go to Demon Spelling 1). We also talked about the worksheet that we did on hard to find subjects. Many students had a hard time understanding it. Because of their lack of understanding, we talked about it and will continue to work on it as a class tomorrow. For bell work the students watched this video about practice and wrote down 3 things that stuck out to them. We then went over a powerpoint about what a sentence is (found on google classroom) and worksheets 19.1 and 19.2 on The Basic Sentence and Complete Subjects and Predicates. Students needed to do Practice 1 on Hard to Find Subjects as homework We also finished taking notes on Notice and Note Signposts
