We did Vocab 4D, then did the replacing overused words assignment. We read the Welcome to the Future text set, and talked about how to integrate sources, and started writing the constructed response. Tues. Mar. 28 We did Vocab 4E, Worked on the Future Constructed Response. After that, we looked at different examples of students evidence and elaboration. We also worked on the descriptive words assignment.

We wrote down the vocab words for Lesson 4 We looked at a SAGE Argumentative Rubric, and highlighted certain elements. We did the "To Rescue or Not" assignment, specifically focusing on claims. Continued to work on our Sports Argumentative Essays, and did the Sports Argumentative Essay Elements assignment. (See Below) Tues. Mar. 21 We talked about varying sentence beginnings, and did an assignment on that. Then, students chose one paragraph from the Sports Argumentative Essay and change up the beginnings. We started looking at the Superhero essay. Wed. Mar. 22 We did Vocab 4A, talked about how to correctly integrate sources into an essay, and worked on the Superhero essay. Thurs. Mar. 23 We did Vocab 4B, and worked on Superhero essays. Fri. Mar. 24 We did Vocab 4C, Lazy Editor assignment (March 2017). We finished our Superhero Essays, and worked on missing assignments. Mon. We did the Using Consistent Verb Tense worksheet. We went around the room and wrote down attributes of the 6 Traits of Writing We read the article The Amazing Powers of Jen Bricker and wrote down one thing for each trait of writing that we noticed in the article. We read the poem "Can't" and wrote down the theme. Tues. March 14 We practiced identifying verbs as helping, action, or linking. We talked about the process of brain storming. 1- State the Question (look at the prompt and figure out what question you will be answering) 2- Generate Ideas (For an argumentative look at both sides) 3-Suspend Criticism (Turn off the part of your brain that says... no that's a silly idea, write it all down) As a class we did that for the prompt of "Write an Argumentative Essay on whether the effects of TV on young people are positive or negative" Then, the students did one on their own with this prompt: "Write an argumentative essay on the effects of technology on friendships. Is it helping or killing them?" We also made a Argumentative essay booklet with definitions of the following: Claim Counterclaim Rebuttal Evidence Elaboration Argument Organization We worked on book reports that are due on Mon. We did 3D Vocabulary Exercise. We read Scene 1, and answered questions #1-4 for Act 2. Then, we did character analysis for Peter, Mr. Van Daan, Miep, and Mr. Kraler. We also did a rationing activity. Tues. Feb. 28 We did the Verb Tense Consistency Paper. We read scenes 2-3. We answered question 5 for Act 2. We did character analysis for Margo, Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Mr. Dussel, and Mrs. Frank. We studied lesson 3 vocab words using Quizlet. (Available on Language Tab.) Tues. Feb. 21
We practiced identifying helping, action, and linking verbs on a powerpoint. We wrote down the vocabulary words from Lesson 3. We started reading The Diary of Anne Frank Play. We talked about the study guide we will be completing throughout the course of reading it. Wed. Feb. 22 We answered questions 1, 3, 4, and 5 on the Anne Frank Study guide. We did vocabulary lesson 3A. Thurs. Feb. 23 We filled out the character chart for Anne, Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank, Peter, Mr. Van Dann, Mrs. Van Daan, Miep, Mr. Kraler. Then we read scene 3. We filled out the character char for Margot, Mr. Dussel, and Mrs. Van Daan. We also answered question 3 on the study guide. We started the verb tenses chart. Fri. Feb. 24 We did Vocabulary Lesson 3B/3C We read scenes 4 and 5 of The Diary of Anne Frank. Then, we filled out the character chart for Mrs. Frank, Margot, Mr. Dussel, Anne, and Mr. Frank. We also answered questions number 7-10 on the study guide. We finished the verb tenses chart, and worked on missing assignments. We learned about analogies. We learned about how to analyzed a prompt: Purpose Audience Subject Type Then we looked at the prompt the students will be writing about: Write a minimum 5 paragraph informative essay to explain what the Night of Broken Glass was, why it happened, and what the far reaching consequences of the night were on Germany and on the Jewish people. Be sure to use text evidence and elaboration in your writing. Afterwards, we watched a video, and read articles and students picked out evidence to use for their essay. (Available on Google Classroom) Tues. Feb. 7 We practiced Analogies, studied vocabulary, and talked about the difference between action and linking verbs. We did the worksheet, "What is a Verb?" We then read more articles about Kristallnacht to find evidence for the essay. Wed. Feb. 8 We took the Vocabulary Lesson 2 Quiz. We looked at an example body paragraph, then students started typing up their first body paragraph. (Topic- Causes of the Night of Broken Glass). Thurs. Feb. 9 We did a linking verbs worksheet. We read the article, "Boys Who Fought the Nazis" and filled out the Power of Information. *Note 7/8 went to the school play. Fri. Feb. 10 We practiced learning the helping verbs via the song on youtube We worked on our body paragraphs of the Krstiallnacht essay. Jan 31 We talked about text structure again, and students wrote a sequential paragraph. We did a prepositions re-do test. We worked on book reports Wed. We did a worksheet on prepositions. We went over how to recognize the reliability of sources, then students found 5 different sources on Martin Luther King Jr. They had to identify why it was a good source or a bad source using the CARS method. Wed. Jan. 18 We reviewed more about prepositions. We Read the poem "O Captain, My Captain" and talked about what an extended metaphor is. We analyzed the poem and talked about what the different parts represented. We started reading "A Mystery of Heroism." Thurs. Jan. 19 We did a subject/verb preposition worksheet. We read the rest of "A Master of Heroism" and did the close reading assignment that went with it. Fri. Jan. 20 We watched the inauguration, then wrote a letter to our future selves about how we felt in the moment. We worked on reading the historical fiction novel for the assignment that is due on Feb. 6. Some started working on the project if they were done with the book. Mon. Jan 23
We wrote down the definitions of the vocabulary words for Lesson 2, then did exercise 2A for vocabulary. We did a Kahoot game practicing recognizing prepositions, and the object of the preposition. We watched a video about Shakespeare, and talked about who he was. We watched a video summarizing A Midsummer's Night Dream then did some activities, including filling in a character map about the most important characters in the play. We also practiced writing sentences and recognizing the subject, verb, preposition, and object of preposition. Tues. Jan. 24 We did Vocabulary exercise 2B. We did the Preposition Review, and corrected it. We watched a video about the similarities of Hip Hop and Shakespeare. Then, we went through to monologues and translated them from Shakespeare's language to modern English. We also created Shakespearean insults. Wed. Jan. 25 We attended the play A Midsummer's Night Dream Thurs. Jan. 26 We did the prepositions test. We reviewed the constructed responses from My Friend Douglass and those who needed to, redid the constructed response. We did an activity where the students created metaphor monsters. We talked about what extended metaphors are, and how to use figurative language. Fri. Jan. 27 We did vocabulary exercise 2C. We talked about text structure and identified paragraphs structure. We did an activity where students answered questions about the short A Mystery of Heroism. |
